🎮 Overview

Hurricane Fruits is a 2D arcade game built around a fast-paced fruit-catching and delivery loop. Each round lasts 60 seconds, and the goal is to earn the highest score possible.

Move from side to side to catch falling fruit, manage a basket with a limited capacity of 10 spaces, and deliver your haul to the cart to score points. Different fruit types offer different rewards and take up different amounts of space, so every catch can affect your next decision.

The playable Beta is available on itch.io. The game was designed primarily for mobile play and also has a browser version for PC testing.

🛠️ Current Features

⚙️ Systems Design

The fruit and hazard systems turn a simple catching mechanic into a short resource-management challenge. Players must balance point value, basket space, and the time remaining in each round.

The current fruit roster uses the following values and basket-space requirements:

🍎 Apple

Basic fruit with a value of 1 point and a basket cost of 1 space. It appears most frequently.

🍊 Orange

Worth 2 points and uses 1 basket space.

🍇 Grape

Worth 1 point and uses 2 basket spaces.

🍍 Pineapple

Worth 5 points and uses 3 basket spaces.

🍌 Golden Banana

A rare pickup worth 10 points that uses only 1 basket space.

⚠️ Hazards

Spiderwebs slow the player temporarily, rocks take up basket space without scoring, and bombs remove all fruit currently in the basket.

🧠 Design Goal

The design goal is to create meaningful choices within a simple, accessible arcade experience. Players have to decide which fruit to collect, when to return to the cart, and how much risk to take as the 60-second timer runs down.

High-value fruit can be tempting, but basket space is limited. Hazards add pressure by slowing movement, taking up capacity, or destroying the current haul. These systems make route timing and basket management important to reaching a higher score.

💻 Development Process

Hurricane Fruits was developed in Unity 6 and is currently available as a playable Beta. I am responsible for both the game design and implementation of the game.

I implemented and tested the core gameplay loop, player input, fruit collection, basket capacity, delivery, scoring, hazards, and gameplay UI. I also prepared a browser build so the game can be tested on PC in addition to its mobile-focused design.

The project gives me an opportunity to combine my Game Design, programming, and QA background in a single development process, from prototyping and implementation to testing and iteration.
